The Metropolitan Borough of Dudley is in the West Midlands. The borough borders Sandwell to the east, the city of Birmingham to the south east, Bromsgrove to the south in Worcestershire, South Staffordshire District to the west, and the city of Wolverhampton to the north.
A part of the Black Country, Dudley traditionally has been an industrial centre of manufacturing, quarrying, and mining. Tourism is of increasing importance to the local economy, attractions such as the Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Zoo bring in thousands of visitors, with 4.3 million visitors to the borough recorded in 2008. The Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Brierley Hill is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK and is the main retail centre of the borough, with an average of 23.5 million visitors a year.
