The Headway National Conference “The Way Ahead” featured a host of workshops running in conjunction the main seminars on the Saturday 2nd July. Delegates were able to choose from a host of topics delivered by Headway UK staff, representatives from groups and branches, and sessions from supporting organisations such as HomeCareDirect.

The one and a half hour workshops ranged from offering practical skills, such as generating local press coverage, how to make successful grant applications and techniques to influence local decision makers. In addition, more theoretical sessions provided information and analysis on topics such as the Care Act, safeguarding vulnerable adults and raising awareness of choice and control through personal health budgets.

HomeCareDirect presented two workshop sessions titled:

“An introduction to Personal Health Budgets”

The workshops offered participants an opportunity to find out about essential aspects of personal health budgets and joined up health and social care funded care.

The sessions were very well attended and the audience was a cross section of service users, carer’s, family members, Headway members and professionals.

For many this was the first conversation they had had about personal health budgets and naturally this created lots of discussion and it was exciting to see the audience become so engrossed in the topic.

Attendees were interested in information about the choices people have and how those with brain and spinal injuries who are in receipt of continuing health care funding can now request this funding in the form of a personal health budget and use a third party service, if they didn’t want to be the employer of their own staff.

Two Headway advisors from the North West who attended said that they knew of personal health budgets but knew little about them and this was a great opportunity to find out more as one advisor said: “We think it’s going to be important in supporting our members in the future.”

The sessions and response from people demonstrated further Headway UK’s desire for the message and knowledge about personal health budgets to be shared locally and regionally with branches and groups across England. This runs in line well with HomeCareDirects desire to spread the word about personal health budgets and the third party options that are available to people.

We hope that we can continue to work with Headway UK in cascading the information about personal health budgets, HomeCareDirect third party services and the choices that are available to many people.
