The Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham is a metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire. It is named for its largest town, Rotherham, but also spans the outlying towns of Maltby, Rawmarsh, Swinton, Wath-upon-Dearne, as well as a suburban and rural element composed of hills, escarpments and broad valleys. It lies on the River Don, at its confluence with the River Rother, between Sheffield and Doncaster. Rotherham is 6 miles from Sheffield City Centre and forms part of the Sheffield urban area.
Rotherham has seen an improving economy over recent years; with new business in new sectors being attracted to the area and overcoming the long-term decline in the areas traditional coal and steel based industries.
