Surrey County Council
The county of Surrey is situated in South East England, due south of Greater London and is one of England’s smallest counties yet it has one of the highest populations. With the characteristic rolling hills of the North Downs, picture postcard country villages and large areas of woodland it is surely one of England’s most beautiful counties.
Under the early Tudor kings magnificent royal palaces were constructed in Surrey, in convenient proximity to London. At Richmond an existing royal residence was rebuilt on a grand scale under King Henry VII, who also founded a Franciscan friary nearby in 1499. The still more spectacular palace of Nonsuch was later built for Henry VIII near Ewell. The palace at Guildford Castle had fallen out of use long before, but a royal hunting lodge existed just outside the town. Surrey is an affluent county with a service based economy closely tied to that of London. The county is said to have the highest proportion of millionaires in the UK.
