Sunderland City Council
The City of Sunderland is a local district of Tyne and Wear although at one time it was considered to be within County Durham. With the status of a city it now has its own university and although it is named after its largest settlement, it covers a far larger area which includes the towns of Houghton-le-Spring, Hetton-le-Hole, Washington and a range of suburban villages. Close to the twin seaside resorts of Seaburn and Roker, Sunderland was once famous for ship building and repair and was the largest ship building town in the world and second to Newcastle in the export of coal which was mined in its region. Fulwell, just north of the City going towards South Shields has the only working windmill in the northeast.
