“It is easier now I don’t have the employment side to worry about”

George is 75 years old and lives in a warden controlled flat in County Durham. He has a direct payment and uses the money to employ his personal assistant, Linda. Linda helps with daily tasks such as making and keeping appointments and supporting George with medication and personal care. George takes an active part in the community where he lives and, having known Linda for many years, they are well known in the area and get on very well together.

George contacted HomeCareDirect in 2007 after researching various options. He still wanted control to be able to continue to employ Linda but was finding the employment regulations increasingly difficult to manage on his own. At HomeCareDirect, we specialise in providing a tailored service to our clients and their families, supporting them in their role as the legal employer of their chosen personal assistants. Some of our clients, like George, are able to come to us with staff in mind, however many don’t. In which case, we help our clients as much as they need to advertise, interview and choose appropriate assistants. We then provide an ongoing service to help with all aspects relating to employment legislation for the people we are working with and their families.

For George, we set about ensuring Linda was trained to CQC standard. At HomeCareDirect we have a dedicated training team of qualified nurses who ensure all personal assistants are trained to the highest standard. Training is undertaken in the homes of the people we work with to ensure it is specifically tailored to their individual care needs. We also ensure the necessary DBS and background checks are up to date. We then set up a tailored package for George where HomeCareDirect manage his ongoing invoicing, PAYE, national insurance payments and payroll.

We asked George how he was finding having his direct payment through HomeCareDirect – “Absolutely ok! No problems – I have only got the one personal assistant, Linda, who has been with me a long time, but it is easier now I don’t have the employment side to worry about”

We extend our warmest wishes and thanks to George and Linda.
