The Options Clinical Team has created a series of help sheets offering advice and guidance for parents and carers who look after children, young people and adults with autism.

Options are a national provider of care and education to children, young people and adults with autism, complex needs and behavioural, emotional and social difficulties (BESD).

This month’s help sheet is all about supporting children and adults with autism & learning disabilities to visit the dentist. Many of us dread the thought of visiting the dentist but for people with autism and/or learning difficulties it can be an especially challenging experience. Difficulties in communication, heightened sensitivity, unfamiliar smells, noises, bright lighting and strange tastes can overload a person’s sensory processing causing anxiety.  However, with a supportive plan most people can have a positive experience at the dentist to ensure good oral health.
