Helping to make personalisation of care at home a success in East Sussex

Direct your own support with a personal budget and direct payment in East Sussex with HomeCareDirect!

East Sussex - Seven Sisters

HomeCareDirect have been working in East Sussex for a number of years to promote the uptake of direct payments and personal budgets. We support people all over the county to find, choose and organise their own personal assistants (PAs) and make the most out of directing their own care at home.

Imagine being able to choose who comes in and out of your home, choosing someone who not only has the right skills but also the right outlook. Then imagine being involved in training them in your specific requirements, in your likes and dislikes.

With personalised and self-directed support this is a reality.

In many situations, if people want to take control of their care in this way, they either have to employ their own PAs, taking on employer responsibility themselves, or find PAs who are willing to be self-employed.

However, there is also the HomeCareDirect Middle Way – which many people in East Sussex are already taking advantage of.

Back in 2003, HomeCareDirect realised that many people would like to take control over their care at home in this way, but do not want the responsibility of being their chosen PAs legal employer, and that PAs did not want to become self-employed.

Therefore, we take on that responsibility for all involved.

If you choose to use the HomeCareDirect Middle Way service, you will remain responsible for choosing your own PAs and organising them on a day-to-day basis.

However, we’ll be responsible for their employment, insurance, tax and payroll, leaving you reassured that your PAs are employed in a legal manner. As part of the service, we can also help you manage your funds (if you so wish) by setting up a separate bank account in your name to receive your direct payment from the council.

Once you’ve chosen your perfect PAs, we’ll use our national network of community nurses to help design a training package tailored to your needs. This will take place in your own home wherever possible with your full involvement.
You will work closely with our local HomeCareDirect independent living nurse.

You will also have a dedicated independent living advisor at our head office as your day-to-day contact coupled with a 24/7, 365 days a year out of hours telephone line in case of emergency.

We are committed to helping you make a success of your personalised care at home. We’ll do as much (or as little!) as you like.

How much does the HomeCareDirect support cost?

East Sussex Map

In line with our dedication to a person centred approach, every single package of support is bespoke to the individual and is designed and priced accordingly. Unlike a standard domiciliary care agency, you won’t find a standard rate – we simply don’t work that way. If your PAs don’t need training in a certain care need we won’t train in it – and therefore why should you have to pay for it?

However, in our experience an average rate would be between £13.50 – £16.00 per hour. Out of this, we will always encourage you to choose to pay your PAs a higher than average agency wage, since we believe in consistency of support, low PA turnover and the quality care staff that higher wages will attract.
