Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.

Built upon 7 hills, Sheffield is located within the valleys of the River Don. 61% of Sheffield’s entire area is green space, and a third of the city lies within the Peak District National Park. There are more than 200 parks, woodlands and gardens in the city, and an estimated 2.5 million trees, giving Sheffield the highest ratio of trees to people of any city in Europe. Sheffield is the 4th largest city in England.

From the middle of the nineteenth century Sheffield was, and still is, one of the world’s most foremost Steel manufacturers. Despite many of the steel firms being shut down after the Second World War, Sheffield produces more steel than ever today. The inventions of new technologies and the change in market demands have kept the industry alive and well.

Today the city of Sheffield is full of opportunity for all. The city is undergoing a strong regeneration programme and is looking more cosmopolitan by the day. It was granted the sporting city of England in recent years and many famous names have performed here and is also host to two great football teams. Sheffield was the first city to have a football team and the first to have a floodlit match; this was held at Brammell Lane. The city’s Cultural Industries Quarter is being vastly regenerated with the addition of the National Centre for Popular Music two years ago. The city has become well known for its musical accreditation’s producing some well known artists such as; Jarvis Cocker, Moloko and Artic Monkeys to name just a few.
