Sadie, a HomeCareDirect client who suffered a traumatic brain injury when she was in a car crash 13 years ago, has donated just over a foot of her hair to the Little Princess Trust.

Sadie was in a coma for three weeks after the accident and spent eight months in Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Her mum, Terrina, explained: “At one point we did not know whether she was going to make it and the doctors were not sure how much she would be able to do when she came out of the coma.”

“But she has done remarkably well and amazed everybody by how far she has come. She is not very mobile as the accident left her with damage to her cerebral cortex, which is the central part of the brain where all the nerves are, and she has no movement in her left arm.

“But she lives independently in her bungalow with help from her PAs and enjoys an active life including going horse riding.”

While Sadie was in hospital her long hair became very matted because it was difficult for staff to brush it while she was in the coma and confined to bed.

“It was her pride and joy,” said Terrina, “But in the end the only solution was for her to have it cut off, it had become so matted it was like dreadlocks. She was really upset at losing her lovely hair, and so the staff organised a wig for her so she felt better about it being cut.

“Now she wants to repay the favour and donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust so it can be made into a wig for some other young person or child who has lost their hair.”

Terrina added: “She is very determined, and has never been a quitter. She has a very good quality of life, something we were not sure she would ever have. We were warned she may need 24 hour care. Her doctors cannot believe how well she has actually recovered and that she goes horse riding.

“She is very self-sufficient and that is wonderful. It was her idea to have her haircut and raise money for the charity too, and we are very proud of her for doing it.”

Well done Sadie from all of us at HomeCareDirect
